Charbens Travelling Zoo Set Rare Vintage Lead/die-cast

  
A rare post-war Charbens 40mm scale lead hollow-cast (part die-cast) Travelling Zoo Set, Catalogue No. The Set comprises an Elephant pulling two Cages containing two Lions and two Polar Bears. The assembled Set measures 300mm (11.8 inches) in overall length. Each Cage has one opening side, which is hinged at the top. The Cages couple together by means of hooks and loops.

The wheels turn freely and the detachable shaft pivots. The wheels on this later version have rubber tyres.

The Cage roofs are removable. The bars on one of the Cages are silver whereas, on the other, they are the same blue as the Cage frame. The Cages are marked underneath CHARBENS MADE IN ENGLAND and the Lions and Polar Bears are marked underneath ENGLAND.

The Elephant has markings at the bottom of its blanket, possibly MADE IN ENGLAND. The Set is largely complete and undamaged except that each Cage has one bar missing at one end. The Elephant's blanket appears to have been re-touched. There is a little play-wear/paint loss to all the pieces.

This Set was made to the slightly smaller 1:43 scale, in which the average height of a man is 40mm (1.6 inches), or 40mm scale. All items are packed carefully and securely in mailing boxes.
