The figure relates to an historic and very heroic episode that took place during the Zulu Wars. After the British camp at Isandlwana was overrun by a mass Zulu attack, Melvill and his colleague Coghill briefly escaped the carnage in a valiant but ultimately vain attempt at saving the Queens Colours. Having been cut down by the Zulus upon reaching the Buffalo river the colours were lost and washed downstream before being eventually retrieved ten days later.
The colours are now in display in Brecon Cathedral and both Melvill and Coghill were posthumously awarded the highest honour available to the British Army in the shape of the Victoria Cross Medal. Please check out my other items for sale. I don't send overseas.
