JAIPUR ELEPHANT WITH STANDARD BEARER. The Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon, organised the Durbar in Delhi at the beginning of 1903 to celebrate the Coronation of Edward VII, the new King of Great Britain and Emperor of India, to which all the States of India were invited to attend. The maharajahs of each state paraded on their state elephants, led by the Viceroy, Lord Curzon on his (Britains model 8848).

In close attendance came the Duke and Duchess of Connaught on their splendidly decorated elephant (Britains 08956). This, the Jaipur elephant (22000) ridden by the three figures, one of whom flies the flag of his state, was depicted by Mortimer Menpes in his book The Durbar. Britains used his painting (see photo above) of the Jaipur elephant as the basis for this model. The elephant comes in the new style box Britains adopted at this time. Everything appears in excellent condition.

Britain issued 5 elephants in their Delhi Durbar series of which this was the last to be issued. The figures are protected by a large amount of foam inside the box and the box will be well-protected inside the parcel.
